The Event!
On the 23rd of May I’ll be throwing myself down the side of East Grinstead Fire Station’s drill tower, with only a rope and some pulleys to stop my almost instant death. Some call it Abseiling, I call it “Why-put-yourself-in-harms-way?-Can’t-I-have-a-nice-cuppa-instead?”. Either way, I’ll be doing it to raise money for an amazing little boy called Dominic Francilla.
Dom Francillia is a cracking little boy, nearly four years old and lives with his parents Gary and Sarah and his two year old brother Joshua (whos is equally smashing!) in East Grinstead. Dominic was diagnosed with Periventricular Leukomalacia ( PVL ) at eight months and subsequently given a diagnosis of Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. This condition primarily affects his gross motor skills and is therefore unable to walk or sit independently (although I’m quite sure he is at least a little mobile; tractors don’t put themselves in washing machines, do they Dom?).
Dom has been accepted as a candidate to go to St Louis Childrens Hospital in Missouri for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy, (SDR involves sectioning (cutting) of some of the sensory nerve fibers that come from the muscles and enter the spinal cord – yikes!). After the op, he’ll be able to walk with the aid of a walker, be toilet trained and get more use from his right arm. It’s not cheap though, £40k covers the pre-op, op and post-op care. This is why Domincs friends and family are throwing themselves down Fire Brigade training towers, jumping out of aeroplanes and attending quiz night fish and chip suppers (… hold on, can I do that instead?).
This is also where you come in. By sponsoring me as little or as much as you can you’ll be helping this little boy walk on his own, wipe his ass on his own and play PlayStation on his own. The three things that any male needs to do unaided. So click the buttons placed about this page and sponsor me to engage in a death-defying act of stupidity on his behalf – I’d better get a ride on your electric wheelchair Dom…
